Step 1: Essentials

note: if you have a wireless internet connection, online goldeneye will not work properly.

You need to complete and or have the following items in order to play GoldenEye online:

>A high speed internet connection
>The Emulator - Mupen 64K 0.79 or Mupen 64++ Beta 0.1.3.12
>For Graphics - Video plugins to make GoldenEye look pretty
>Setup Mupen64K for your input device (gamepad, keyboard, etc)
>Add your GoldenEye ROM to Mupen64K
>Confirm your GoldenEye ROM MD5 identifier
>Confirm your computer is fast enough to run GoldenEye with the Mupen 64K emulator.

After going through that list, if everything step is successful, then you are ready to play GoldenEye online!

Skip directly to Step 2: How to play GoldenEye Online

If you don't have high speed internet then you will not bother with the remaining steps! Sorry to say, but at least I warned you before attempting online play with dial up internet. The speed of your internet connection in PING and <100 is ideal for playing GoldenEye online. I am usually at 78, and I have played a player with 107 and the game was running perfectly. So the larger distance between players means the Ping (lag) goes up.

Think of the emulator as being the Nintendo 64 console. This is the first emulator in history to run GoldenEye online! Unzip the files on your computer, but first name a folder and make sure you can find it later! Once you have installed the emulator (unzipped), you should run the emulator and use it as a reference point for the remaining parts of the tutorial.

where to unzip the graphic Plugins you just downloaded Tutorial:

In the Nintendo 64 emulation world, these are the most solid and best performing video plugins out there. Follow these next screenshots after downloading the video plugins.

You have 2 choices!

Quick Method: Simply unzip the downloaded files into this folder as shown here. The main directory of Mupen has a "plugin" folder as shown here. Unzip the files directly into the "plugin" folder. If you do, then you have completed this step already!

Long Method: Unzip the two files elsewhere on your computer. Simply copy the two files and paste them into the "plugin" folder as shown here. The main directory of Mupen has a "plugin" folder.

You are done this step!

NOTE: Please don't be confused by the "Mupen64K 0.61" in these screenshots. These steps are the same regardless of what version of Mupen you are using.

setting up your controls for playing goldeneye tutorial:

So you want to play GoldenEye without the official Nintendo 64 controller? Shame on you! Buy the USB adapter here which allows you to hook up your original controllers to the PC. They aren't that expensive. I have 4 of them! Nintendo sells the brand new original grey Nintendo 64 controllers here. Having said this, you likely don't want to wait for the USB adapter to arrive in the mail before trying this out. Luckily you can set up the emulator to play GoldenEye with a mouse and keyboard or any other PC compatible controller. To learn how to set up the keyboard and mouse, check this link here and here and here. Remember though, to use a keyboard and mouse setup properly, you will need to use Nrage Direct-Input8 V2 2.00B input plugin.

For those with the USB adapters, you need to set them up properly! Follow my guide here that will ensure you have it set up properly. Again, you can use any joystick/controller that you have handy for playing GoldenEye. Just configure it smartly....keep reading! These screenshots are for the NRage Direct-Input8 V2 2.00b plugin. If you decide to use NRage Direct-Input8 1.60, the setup is very similar.

The main configuration window opens up. From this point it's just a standard button assigning task. Click on the buttons and then you press the button on your controller that you want to use. Remember to click "Save Profile" which will save your configuration.

IMPORTANT: Notice the check mark in the box "Plugged". If you only have one controller and want to still see multiplayer, then simply click the "Controller 2" tab and tick the "Plugged" box. This will allow one controller to control both players in the game. Important: If you don't have 2 controllers indicated here, the GoldenEye game won't even make multiplayer selectable.

You need Mupen64K to find your GoldenEye ROM. To do this, follow this screenshot:

After you add your rom directory, you will need to "Refresh ROM List" as shown here. File > Refresh ROM List. Your GoldenEye rom will appear in the list!

This is the most critical aspect of online GoldenEye. Your ROM MD5 identification has to be a match of your opponents. Yes, every opponent in your online game. To verify your MD5 identifier, follow what I've done in these screenshots.

Look at this screenshot. In order to find your MD5 Checksum, you will have to first click on the button that reads "Calculate". You can then copy that information and paste in into your online game room to verify what your opponents are using.

You need to establish whether or not your PC can run GoldenEye at a playable speed. I could list some recommended PC requirements, but when you realize the variety of video cards, processors and ram combinations, there is only one solution. TEST IT OUT! Do this before you head online because if you are slow, then the game for everyone online will be slow. Basically with GoldenEye online, the framerate is as fast as the slowest computer in the game. So don't be selfish and try playing online if your PC is not fast enough. It ruins the online experience for everyone. Remember that! Okay, to start your test, check your video plugin settings like this:

Here is Jabos 3D8 1.6 video plugin settings. Please note that all the fancy options like "Antisotropic filtering" and "Super2xSal textures" are set to Off. Very important! Do it before you go online or you will experience desynch. Also note "Windowed Resolution" which will make the game window small, but will make it play faster. Start small like I have here, or even smaller depending on how your PC plays Mupen64K. Don't go for big because chances are the online game will be slow and frustrating for everyone involved.

Step 2: How to play GoldenEye Online tutorial:

Before you go online to play, ensure the following plugins are selected:

This is it. Use this screenshot to verify that you are using these plugins BEFORE looking for games online. Just trust me on this one okay?

Yes, I have N-Rage's Direct-Input8 1.60 plugin listed here, but I recommend that you use the NRage Direct-Input8 V2 2.00b version instead.

IMPORTANT: Before you go online, you MUST complete this step. Ensure that "RawData" box is unchecked otherwise desynch will occur! I am showing you the Nrage Direct-Input8 V2 2.00B instructions for unticking the "RawData" box.

Note the tabs --->

"Controls", "Devices", "Modifiers", "Controller Pak"

You will need to click on the "Controller Pak" tab. Do it!

After clicking the "Controller Pak" tab you will see the "RawData" box. Make sure it is unticked!!

Important: Check the "RawData" box for Controller 2, 3 and 4 also just to ensure none of them are ticked.

Note: You will not have to do this each time you play! Do it once, and forget about it.

Okay, you've now completed the step of unticking "Raw Data". So, on with the next step!

Now you are ready to play online! Open Mupen64K and go to Utilities > Kaillera. As you see in this screenshot, you can select either Kaillera (a newer interface) or the Old Kaillera (older interface). I have chosen to show you Old Kaillera, but it makes no difference which one you use. However, old Kaillera has less game-start problems than the new interface and may be preferrable if you are experiencing issues.

Kaillera is the netplay client. High ping > 110 will likely result in laggy framerates. The closer you are to the server location (east coast, central, west coast) the better (lower) your ping.

After opening Old Kaillera from the previous screenshot, you will see this window open. From here there are 2 important elements. First, don't change the "Connection type", leave it as the default. Leave it alone! Second, you need to pick a server to play on. So, click on the "Enter IP" button and enter this address:

69.90.34.14:27888

To find GoldenEye games, use that IP address. I also recommend that you go to the GoldenEyeOnline.com Chat Room to find players and games! Meet in the chat, then decide which Kaillera server will give you the best (lowest) ping games.

Create a username and enter it in the "Username" space.

Okay, so after you enter the IP Address and enter a "Username", click on the "Connect" button.

See "Game" column. Look for GoldenEye! At the time of the screenshot there weren't any GoldenEye games to show you. Your rom version needs to match what is listed here. You may find patched roms being played, in which case they will read differently than the typical "GoldenEye (U)(!)". If you don't have the exact same rom, then you can't play.

The "Version" column lists what emulator is being used. You need to find a game using the same version of Mupen64K as you! So look for Mupen64K 079 versions. There are beta versions of Mupen64K so just be aware. Don't enter a room with a different version emulator. It will not play!

The last point is "Status". You can only join game rooms that show "Waiting".

You can create your own game also. Simply click "Create new game" To select your game, just move the mouse over the letter "G" and then the GoldenEye rom will be selectable. Just look at the screenshot and it will make sense.

After selecting your GoldenEye rom, this window will open. It is your game room. From here you wait! Be very patient for players. It make take a minute or it may take more than 15 minutes. Regardless it's worth the wait! Players will show up and will be listed in the blank section that is highlighted red in the screenshot. Once you have your players, click on the "Start" button. Enjoy!!

In this example I will show you the newer Kaillera interface.

After clicking "Kaillera" from the Mupen64K menu, this is the next window that opens. You can see in the lower right corner, the IP ADDRESS section, where you can paste in this server:

69.90.34.14:27888

Just copy and paste this address in the section that I have highlighted red in this screenshot. If you want you can get a full server list. Follow this screenshot. Right click and select "Refresh Server List".

After a few moments, the available Kaillera servers will be listed. I do recommend that if you want to find Nintendo 64 emulators and GoldenEye games, then you should just enter the IP Address listed above. Having said that, you can always check around at the more popular servers. Just sort the listing by "Users". Find the busy servers!

After you have entered the IP address as recommended earlier or chosen a server from the list, a new window like this one will open.

You can simply double click a game listed in the server or you can create your own game. In this screenshot, you can see the interface system when creating a game. Basically it is a "flyout" menu. It will list your available roms only as the letter. Once you hover over the letter a flyout menu appears with the rom(s). Just look at the red highlighted areas in the screenshot.
